Let free entry support a shorter visit

Lodhi Garden mixes a free public garden with historic tombs, mosque structures and bridges. Families can combine a short walk with a simple comparison of domes and building shapes, without buying a monument ticket or attempting every path.
All ages; supervise around water, steps and historic masonry
Choose a short garden route with one visible architectural comparison, keeping the return gate clear.

Comparing a square building with an octagonal one gives children something they can see for themselves. Add dates only when they ask or when a label helps the comparison.
The garden’s attraction is the combination of landscape and historic buildings rather than one compulsory circuit. Choose a nearby dome as a first landmark, then a path that returns comfortably towards the chosen gate. Younger children can recognise shapes while older children compare how the structures sit within the modern park. Keep the route flexible and avoid turning a free garden visit into a long history lecture.
Delhi Tourism identifies Muhammad Shah and Sikandar Lodhi’s tombs with octagonal forms, and Shish and Bara Gumbad with square forms. That visible difference gives a child a concrete way to look at architecture. Count sides only where it can be done from a permitted position; there is no need to circle every structure. Explain that historic masonry should not be climbed even when the surrounding garden feels informal.
NDMC identifies walking and jogging facilities at Lodhi Garden. A family can simply choose a shaded stretch, notice birds without feeding them and stop at a comfortable place. Do not assume fountains, specialist garden sections or every historic interior operate as a separate visitor attraction. Share paths considerately with walkers and runners, and keep young children close at changes in surface or level.

Ordinary entry is free, so a short visit does not need to justify a ticket price. NDMC’s morning opening shifts from 5am in April–September to 6am in October–March, while the published closing time remains 8pm. Check any temporary gate notice. The opening window is not a recommendation to walk after dark with a small child; daylight makes the historic surfaces and route easier to judge.

Locate a usable toilet and water source before settling into a longer stay; a current detailed family-facility audit was not found. Carry permitted essentials and remember which entrance the family used. A large garden can make an opposite-side exit inconvenient for the return journey. Ask about the accessible path needed rather than assuming every tomb approach or bridge has the same level access as a main garden path.

Safdarjung’s Tomb is a separate ticketed monument, not another free room within Lodhi Garden. It can be a useful architecture comparison for an interested older child, but it adds another transfer and outdoor route. For a preschooler, one garden and a meal may be enough. Choose the pairing by interest rather than proximity alone, and check Safdarjung’s current partial repair restrictions before promising an interior route.
